Partner support
The role of a partner in labour and birth can be a powerful initiation into a deeper more intimate relationship then ever before. What is also needed is the support for the partner in how they can be of greater service.
A Doula is not just for the mother. A doula is also there to guide, teach, support and encourage the partner to be the best support they can be on the day without feeling overwhelmed or in deep waters as they to have the support of their doula to guide them.
I cant tell you the amount of times a dad/partner has turned to me during and after the birth and said “thank god you were there!” I think it’s too much pressure to expect a partner who mostly knows little about labour and birth until their life presents that experience through the pregnancy of their partner.
It is impossible to learn everything in a short span of time, which is why more and more couples are seeing the importance and need for extra support in the form of a Doula for the pregnancy and birthing journey.
Partners need support through the process of navigating their fears and concerns around pregnancy and birth. It may be a different experience but it’s still imperative we hear the needs of dads and partner and what it is they need to feel present, connected and empowered on the day of birth.
